12 SIMPLE SOLUTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL SAILING

1.) Stay present. Put any thoughts that do not 100% serve you into a bucket on the dock or say "Next".

2.) Orient yourself to the boat - check check - start inside the boat at the bow working towards the stern including weather, charts, tides and currents. Decide sail selection and then start up on deck working from the bow to the stern. Prepare all sails and running rigging. For many women their core value is safety. This is ok...just give yourself the time to check and ready everything so you feel comfortable and safe before you go. Give yourself the time and permission to succeed and know that you are OK just the way you are.

3.) Know before you go - before you leave the dock, know how the boat handles, how the wind and current effects you. What is your role and everyone else's role on the boat. After leaving the dock practice maneuvering in a tight space. Putting the motor into forward and reverse and find out how long it takes to stop the boat.

4.) Give yourself permission - know that you will have to specifically ask your partner for what you want. For example, more time to check out the boat or orient yourself to the boat. If you want to ask "WHY"?, this is ok. Be aware! If your partner is using his male side he may wonder if you trust or accept him. It is important that you do not take anything personally. Communicate clearly and calmly that this is not about your partner. The question Why? is about your requirements to become a better fun and skilled sailing partner. You will be able to assist more freely and confidently if you have an understanding of how things work and relate to each other on the boat. Know what the difference between the role of skipper and crew is. Put yourself into these roles..take baby steps if necessary. If you believe that you are unable to be the skipper then this is your truth. Believe that you can and anything is possible.

5.) Give yourself evidence - remember that your mind is there to protect you. It is designed this way. When you are learning something new and making change...parts of us and or others do not like the change at first. It is important for you to put your gremlins or thoughts that are not serving you in a bucket or let them go like clouds or say "Next". Celebrate every success no matter how big or small....pat yourself on the back...jump up and down...give a thumbs up. Your body holds memory and will gradually love the success. Go with what feels good. Ask yourself: "What feels good right now". If it feels not good...just think of a time when it did feel good or you had a success and focus on that. Remember: "What I focus on expands".

6.) Give up looking good - above all give up worrying about what others think. Everyone is wearing a different set of glasses so to speak. None of it matters since we all see the same thing differently. If someone has an issue about something, it is not about you ...it is about them. Work at whatever pace works for you in your learning style to build confidence and understanding. Sailing is both an art and a science. Stay present, breathe, BE committed with enthusiasm and joy. This is all it takes to BE successful.

7.) Use your brains and not your brawn - Sailing does not have to be a grunting and groaning sport. There are many ways that a women of any size or shape can make things easier on the boat. Learn to stand in your power, handle the lines with a zen stance. Develop a sensitivity and connection between you and the boat through your feet. It is also a good idea to wear sailing gloves and appropriate shoes on deck to help keep you stable, strong and confident.

8.) Ask for what you want from yourself and from your sailing partner - Remember that the core value for women is often safety and the core value for men is freedom. Take the time to figure out what you want and need to be safe on the boat with appropriate equipment, reefing techniques, going to the boat early for check, check. Give your partner a role such as the operations manager. Let him have the responsibility for operational tasks on the boat....give him the freedom to do this work without questioning him. Let him or her know that it means a lot to you to be safe on the water and how they can empower you. What feels good?

9.) Commitment - It takes commitment to give clear communication from both partners and or with crew to make things go smoothly on board and have fun...to enjoy rather than fear the experience.

Commit to finding out what it is you want - "What I focus on expands". Get clear on this and then take the time to focus on it...how does it feel?. Take baby steps to get where you want to go with your learning, training, relationship with a partner on the boat and whatever else you think will help empower you to be a skipper or a fun and skilled sailing partner.

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it - Boldness has genius, power and magic in it"

10) Believe in yourself - Be accountable and responsible for everything in your life - starting now. This way you gain your power back. Go with your intuition, what your heart has to say rather than your head. Believe in you - you are beautiful. Your inherent or true self knows best. If yelling takes place on a boat...it is not about you- it is about the other person. Belief is the ignition switch that gets you off the launching pad.

11) Sail with women - Women like to sail with other women at least part of the time, because women understand women. It is helpful to sail with other women to solidify your concept and new reality on the boat.

12) Where your attention goes, energy flows and results show - everything is energy and what I focus on expands. Start paying attention to what you focus on and notice it. If you catch yourself thinking that you can not do it...or you are not good enough or you will hit the dock, or that you are not a good sailor then this will be your truth and reality. Start to notice and observe your thoughts - then take some time to make some change. Use declaration statements such as: I am in the process of learning, I am committed to learning or becoming a competent sailor or fun and skilled sailing partner. Put yourself in the NOW!

Most of all have fun, laugh lots with joy and enthusiasm. Enjoy your own passion for the sea or whatever aspect of the outdoor environment makes you feel good. It could be a sunset, the seagulls flying over the sea, the wind caressing your face or the silence of moving through the water. The freedom of BEING a women, exploring and discovering your true self. Let your Spirit fly!
