GULF ISLANDS SAILING

2005 'Sailing in Awareness Retreats" We expanded our comfort zone this year!

This year we introduced something new for our 7 day sailing retreats and the feedback from our clients was a thumbs up!. As a result of our grad's feedback we now offer a 7 day Gulf Island Sailing Cruise Retreat Program which includes a combination of accommodation at the beautiful Protection Island B&B and a 3 day sailing cruise through the Gulf Islands. This is a wonderful opportunity to take the sailing skills you already have or the new ones that you learn and put them to use .Clients are able to expand upon their sailing skills: such as current passages through the famous Dodd Narrows, Gabriola Passage, docking, anchoring, passage planning and navigational skills. Explore new areas and really get a taste of Gulf Island Cruising. Most of all - FUN!

We also offer Canadian Yachting Basic and Intermediate Cruising Certification

In one 7-day sailing cruise retreat with HERIZEN™ I felt an amazing growth and empowerment. This is sailing- and living as it should be. I was totally supported as I went through a difficult transformation process, shedding old energy and rejoicing in the new, sparking awareness of what is possible, as I learned not only how to better sail my Catalina 27 but to set my sails in my life journey.

Sue Irwin - Canada

NEW SAILING CO-OP ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

Last newsletter I mentioned something about the new sailing co-op in Nanaimo. Wow are things happening with this group. They now have over 100 members and about 6 boats in the fleet. Many HERIZEN™ Grads have joined the club sharing their love of sailing and expanding their sailing skills. If you live in the area check out their web site. If you live somewhere else this may spark an idea for you to get sailing folks together in a creative way and more boats out on the water. Either way take a look , go to a meeting or drop them a line.

The Van Isle Sailing Co-op is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sport of sailing, the cooperative ownership of boats, and showing people how to sail. Annual dues maintain the boats and pay for moorage and insurance. You get to sail with experienced sailors and at work parties you learn to maintain boats. Boats and meetings are held in Nanaimo, BC. Great way to meet new people and go sailing.

If you live on Vancouver Island and want to go sailing - check out the Van Isle Sailing Co-op

BOATING IN AWARENESS SAFETY TIPS

YOUR SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR PERSON OVERBOARD (POB) RECOVERY MANEUVOR. NOW WHAT?

Last newsletter I posed the question "Do You have a person overboard plan and do you practice it? I hope that this stimulated some thoughts and action on your part to develop a plan and practice it this summer.

To further the question on this subject. "Once you have successfully returned your vessel to the POB and you have approached them on the windward side how do you recover them from the water?"

Once you are successful in getting to the POB this is only half of the task at hand. Because of the high freeboard of a cruising boat, recovery of a POB can be even more of a problem than maneuvering to them. Success depends upon a good action plan already put in place, recovery equipment available to the crew, their ability to use it and the mental and physical state of the POB.

Here are a few tips:

* Remember to keep the POB on the boat's windward side as you approach them.

* A boarding ladder. A ladder can be dangerous in a rolling sea. Make a bowline in the end of a line or sheet, lower into the water, and wrap the other end around a winch, leaving enough slack for the POB to get a foot or knee into it. The main halyard may also be attached to assist.

* If towing a rubber dinghy the POB may be able to climb into it and be assisted from there. Partial deflation of the dinghy facilitates entry for the POB.

Reminder: never put another person into the water to assist. You do not need two people to recover from the water at any one time.

*Detach the boomvang and use it as a block and tackle on the end of the main halyard. You could also have your own block and tackle suited for your boat specifically for this purpose.

*Use the jib lowered over the side as a sling. The tack should be lashed to the toe rail and the clew sheeted hard. Where possible injured POB's should be lifted horizontally.

* A life sling and a person overboard pole are great pieces of recovery equipment to have available.

Lets hear from YOU. Any tips from our readers? Are you willing to share your ideas or stories for your POB recovery from the water techniques. We appreciate hearing your ideas - don't be shy.

SKIPPERED AND TRAINING CHARTERS

Besides our regular Gulf Island Sailing Cruise Retreats, this season was particularly busy with cruise and learns aboard clients boats. This year we sailed a number of Beneteaus, Catalinas and Hunters ranging from 32 to 50 feet. One client brought 3 friends from Germany and hired HERIZEN™ to skipper and teach sailing aboard a new Beneteau 393. We traveled from Vancouver over to the Gulf Islands and had a wonderful time. Later the same client flew back from Germany and we traveled for two weeks on a private training charter for two weeks up the Sunshine Coast and into Desolation Sound. Weather and sailing was amazing including the cougars, grizzly bears and the whales. These are just a few of the experiences we had this year. Women are stepping up to the plate and challenging themselves with bigger boats and exploring new areas not to mention increasing mental and physical strength around navigational skills, anchoring, docking, transiting current areas like Active, Dodd, Poiler and Gabriola Passages. Understanding and determining high and low water tides and still have FUN!. Ladies, if you own your own boat and you really want to apply sail training, build confidence and learn some new cruising areas - this is the way to go.

We are available to fly anywhere you have your boat moored to assist you in becoming more confident to sail, maintain and handle your own boat. Give us a call or write by e-mail to find out about pricing.
